Disk Union Jazz in Shinjuku should be your first stop in town for both shopping and information on upcoming gigs. First floor is new cds, the second used cds, and the third new and used vinyl. The selection of new cds is impressive, especially the amount of smaller label releases and fusion albums. Bargain used cds are plentiful upstairs but don`t hesitate as there`s a quick turnover week to week. For vinyl collectors the third floor is a treat. I picked up a good condition copy of `Cosmic Vortex` by Weldon Irvine for only ¥1200, and was shocked to see a copy of `Black Woman` by Sonny Sharrock, a rare album from the late 60s. Well-heeled collectors won`t be disappointed either as there were several rare Eric Dolphy albums starting at around ¥16,000 (US$170) Right inside the entrance to the first floor is a stand loaded with fliers for concerts and clubs around town. The staff are also always clued in to smaller gigs that are coming up and though most of them don`t speak much English they will usually be able to help you out with shopping and gig info.
