Review:

Jazz Country is a basement cafe/bar, real small and dark with seriously loud speakers..I dropped by in the early afternoon and there were 6 other customers sitting quietly, absorbed in the music. Loved the vibe! Nonomiya-san opened the place 30 years ago and has been able to keep it going despite the astronomical rise in rent in the Ginza area. He told me that the afternoon "cafe" time is for the real jazz fans, at night the volume goes down a bit and the customers are there for drinks and chat..so he has a hefty table charge after 6:30pm..this was his roundabout way of telling me to only come in the afternoon with the other jazz heads.

He's got a lot of records behind the small bar, and was playing an original Hank Mobley Blue Note when I came in..that really should be enough recommendation for any jazz fan, right?

Ginza is not really where you would expect to find such a place so if you are bored shopping or want to avoid the BGM-wine/jazz bars that are the norm in this area, Jazz Country is the place to be.

Directions:
Tricky to find! Check this map here http://www.ginza.info/S66913.html The red bulb with the black dot in it is where Jazz Country is. You can use either the Ginza subway exit or the JR Yurakucho station a few blocks up. Keep a lookout for the large Aux Baccanales cafe/bar on the corner on Namiki-Dori, when you see that you go down the narrow street with many bar signs. The Jazz Country sign will be on the right side.
